01Project description

The aim of the project is to develop a hybrid photovoltaic cell with a unique architecture using ZnO structures. The cell architecture that guarantees at least 20% efficiency will also reduce the production cost by nearly 30%.
R&D works will be based on the concept developed at the Institute of Physics PAS, covered by patent protection. Its innovation is the use of ALD and Hydrothermal techniques in the development of a completely unique cell architecture that allows, on the one hand, the improvement of physico-chemical parameters and, on the other hand, the elimination of some energy-consuming modules and critical elements from the production process of PV cells.

The works carried out so far have confirmed the critical functions of the technology, i.e. the possibility of depositing ZnO layers, including ZnO nanorods as components of the PV cell architecture, and their positive impact on the cell's efficiency (improvement by 2-4 percentage points). The identified research problems in the areas of metallisation, selective layer deposition and the need to identify alternative techniques or materials positively affecting the cell's efficiency require further research. What's more, the technology requires the creation of a dedicated laboratory environment that allows research, testing and optimisation to be carried out on substrates with dimensions of 15.6 × 15.6 cm.
The research works will include, first of all, the study of multicomponent semiconductor layers, the study of the impact of the density and dimensions of the nanorods on the cell's performance, the development of experimental prototypes of masks for selective layer deposition, analysis and modelling, and the experimental selection of environmental parameters. Secondly, the creation of a dedicated laboratory environment, prototyping and testing under simulated operating conditions. As part of the development work, the optimisation of prototypes, testing in real conditions and verification of compatibility with machine parks for the production of PV modules were planned.

The agreement No. POIR.01.01.01-00-1022 / 16-00 under Measure 1.1 "R&D projects of enterprises", Sub-measure 1.1.1 "Industrial research and development work carried out by enterprises" of the Intelligent Development Operational Program 2014-2020.
