01Project description

The aim of the project is to develop technology for the manufacturing of a surface electrode on the photovoltaic cells by utilising a proprietary process for interchangeable operation in the integrated set of reactors. This aim will be achieved through the implementation of research works consisting of the development of new operating conditions of ALD and Hydrothermal (microwave-assisted) reactors in one integrated process line, for the final production of nanostructures enhancing the parameters of solar to electrical energy conversion in the photovoltaic cells.
The subject of the project will involve research work including: (i) development of technology for the growth of ZnO nanorods on a full-scale photovoltaic cell of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation; (ii) preparation of laboratory environment and (iii) coating with a doped (experimentally chosen compounds like Mg) ZnO layer and a ZnO:Al top contact layer along with sapphire protective layers by means of an integrated set of reactors. In the course of the project, a method for manufacturing transparent electrodes with unique utility functions (including Anti-Reflection, UV Blocker, Emitter, and transparent electrodes) will be developed within an integrated process line (ALD/Hydrothermal/ALD). The result of the project will be a technology in the field of photovoltaics, providing innovative 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation cells, which contain a 3D structure of ZnO rods ZnO:Mg, ZnO:Al., ZnO:XX layers, rendering material- and energy-intensive techniques and technologies of photovoltaic cells diffusion and surface metallisation obsolete.
As a result of the project, the non-toxic ZnO nanorods embedding process will be applied. Base technology has been developed and patented by the Institute of Physics of PAS and licensed to the CBRTP S.A. The product will constitute an alternative to currently used cell manufacturing technologies, with a very high potential for reducing costs; therefore, it will be addressed both to the module manufacturers and cell producers.
